I didn't get a tax return. I had to pay taxes :(. Not much, and thank god for Baby Step #1. I'm using almost all of my surplus income each month to pay down credit cards, to the tune of $950/month. I'm giving myself $20-$30/week for miscellaneous spending. I'm going to have to scrounge a bit to make sure they're paid off by June, but the relief of having that income available will be tremendous. For me I have to take it paycheck by paycheck. If I think about the entire process I get overwhelmed, but when I just focus on what I'm going to do with my upcoming check and how that will help with my total plan, I'm much more likely to stick with it. I do have my goals, like June 2010, so that I don't slack off in the middle.

Then I get to work on my car note, which is my last non-student loan debt. I'll also be starting to save for a wedding sometime this year (my boyfriend has more information on when that starts than I do), so funds will be a little stretched then. I know that, for me, I can't lunge from one debt into another. That makes me anxious about not being able to use my money how I want to, and then I go back into the same cycle. So for two months after the cards are paid off, I'm going to keep 1/3 of my surplus to myself, and use the other 2/3 to focus on paying off my car. Then, presuming those funds don't go toward the wedding fund, I'll put them all toward the car fund and try and get that puppy paid off.

Awesome, i will for sure check your Networthiq page out. What exactly are you doing to pay off the cards? Cutting Spending? Using Tax Return money? If you don't mind elaborating just a little bit. It might help me, or others. Thanks again!

Hey, been a busy (snowed-in) few weeks here. Things are going pretty well. I'm on track to pay off one credit card in full by April 15th, and hopefully the second by June 30. It'll take some juggling and reining in my spending, but I'm SO looking forward to it. Then I'll have NO MORE CREDIT CARDS. You can see the full brunt of my debt load on networthiq as well. I'm Ronnieaj over there :D.

Douglas,
I loved your blog on "bad financial habits"-It hit my biggest saving issue right on the nub. When I get bored or I'm in a hurry or HEAVEN FORBID I get a craving I scrounge up all my quarters and go buy ice cream or treat a friend to lunch. When really that's a couple bucks that could go into my savings account. This was a great addition to the discipline I've been needing lately and I look forward to more realistic advice for actual human beings.
Thanks for the help--you are a great inspiration to my financial ways :)
